The King of the Wood / His Beginning-Pt one

His mind elsewhere, he was just wandering, going nowhere but his wandering brought him to a small bridge. The small concrete footpath spanning the small stream, no hand rail made it a rather sorry excuse for a bridge. The sun shining brightly, he was puffing  strongly, not from running but from the heat of the day and with the recent news he was given had devastated him so. Situated on the edge of open moor land, and nearby cottages over seeing the tranquil scene, the picturesque beauty he was surrounded by did nothing for his mood, probably not even noticing his surroundings, sitting with legs dangling, leaning forward, head in his hands and struggling to control his heart beat and his thoughts. His mind jumping from one memory to another, good ones and bad ones, and ones he did not even realize he remembered.
This afternoon he was laughing and joking with a couple of his friends, not a care in the world, now his world has been turned upside down. This tunnel he was travelling was dark and he could not see any light. His world was now falling apart. Head in hands and staring into the clear waters of the stream, the sound of running water with its gentle flow was hypnotic and into a trance he was drifting.  Why? he kept saying to himself,Why? life is so unfair, she did not deserve this, so final, nothing after, I am now completely alone. Maybe there is life after and she will be looking out for him, something he could not be sure of, she will always be alive to him. Never to see her again, physically, so, as long as her image and memories are in his head she will always be alive. Deep in thought and completely alone, fully entranced in his own world he did not realise that the day was closing. The sun now low in the sky and casting long shadows mixed with that unusual light, not quite day and not quite night. One particular shadow passed by, passing across him, vanishing as quickly as it appeared. He looked up, a little startled, to see the cause of the shadow, but nothing was visible.
